Sundial Sculpture

The Sundial Sculpture, completed in 2022, is located in front of Hongxin College inXili Campus (Liuxiandong Area). Its design follows traditional Chinese equatorial sundial, preserving the essential principles of classical Chinese timekeeping. It consists of the dial plate and the gnomon. The dial plate is aligned parallel to the Earth’sequator, and the gnomon points to the North Celestial Pole. Shadows move across the engraved marks to indicate time, embodying the ancient wisdom ofobserving celestial phenomena to tell time. The concept echoes the philosophical insight expressed in the Book of Changes (I Ching):“By observing the patterns of heaven, one perceives the changes of time.”It also resonates with the teaching in the Book of Documents (Shangshu):“Respectfully providing the proper seasons for the people.”In this way, the sculpture brings together the measurement of time and the cultivation of human values, symbolizing the deep connection between knowledge, nature, and education.
